Systems areas

Network equipment and computer servers need secure environments with stable electricity sources and appropriate climate conditions to operate.

To this end, ARNES has built two systems areas which house the main PoPs of the ARNES network and the computer equipment needed to provide such services as electronic mail, hosting virtual servers and multimedia services.

The systems areas are located in the ARNES premises at Ljubljana Technology Park and the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana. The two areas are connected by high-speed links running over physically separate routes using leased optical fibres.

Basic characteristics of systems areas:

• Two separate sources of electrical power, with backup generators.
• Two uninterrupted power supplies with built-in redundancy.
• Redundant cooling systems.  
• Fire detection and extinguishing system. 
• Server and communications cabinets.
• Physical protection, access control system and video monitoring.
• System to monitor the operation of the whole infrastructure.
