Backbone network

ARNES provides a powerful resilient backbone network infrastructure, based on Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology. Network PoPs (Point-of-Presence), to which organisations eligible for ARNES services connect, are present in major Slovenian towns.

The backbone network enables two types of service:

  • Point-to-point connections: intended for demanding projects and connecting redundant computer centres. Connection capacity: 1 Gb/s or 10 Gb/s.
  • IP-connectivity: the service is based on routers. It supports IPv4 and IPv6. Connection capacity between large PoPs is 10 Gb/s, and 1 Gb/s to small PoPs.

Neither point-to-point nor IP-connectivity connections are restricted geographically to Slovenia. Connections to the GÉANT European education and research network provide connections within Europe and to other continents.

Connections between ARNES network PoPs are based on leased optical fibres. The fibre routes are planned and implemented in loops, providing redundant connectivity to PoPs. The backbone network thus ensures a high level of reliability – in case of fibre cut all the PoPs in the loop remain connected.

Organisations eligible for ARNES services have to provide connectivity to one of the PoPs and the necessary communication equipment. ARNES offers consulting, helps choosing the most appropriate equipment and connectivity option and also manages equipment connecting the organization to the network (CPE).

* Connecting to PoP has to be approved in advance by ARNES (svetovanje@arnes.si).
